Salon #4 - The Babble of Babel

In the fourth iteration of the THING-SPACES salon, we will communicate impossibly through our various untranslatabilities. Moving from New York to São Paulo, we will each attempt to translate from our cultural, linguistic, artistic, idiosyncratic mother tongues and explore what is lost, but also what is found through our hopeless translations, and our valiant babbling. We are looking for twelve "languages", "tongues", "interpreters" of all genre, to speak unknowingly together.

about THING-SPACES

THING-SPACES is a series of experimental and experiential salons that seek to create an intellectual and artistic environment for exploring ideas about "thing-spaces" in original ways. "THING-SPACES" is a provocation to think of things not only as inanimate objects circumscribed by their material dimension, but as dynamic entities that invoke environments and creating spaces, and to think of spaces not only as abstract spatial vectors but also as microcosms embodied in things. By con-fusing things and spaces, we aim to catalyze the proliferation of innovative and paradoxical ways of imagining, relating, and enacting "thing-spaces" - dynamic entities that cannot easily be resolved as "things" or "spaces" without a radical re-orientation of each concept.

Indeed, a "thing" (or a thingumbob, or a thingamajig) is colloquially used to indicate what a speaker can't name at the moment. And "space" could also be taken to mean "to be in a state of drug-induced euphoria". Perhaps it is this spirit which we hope to excite in our sessions, engaging the esoteric clouds of ineffable ideas through euphoric lines of flight unfettered by the conventions of academia or the institutions of art.
